Chapter 1

How to Fish Game beginner guide

Learn the controls, fund the first loadout, and earn the Boat Keys.

The basics

First-Hour Priorities

The opening route is a catch-kill-sell loop that leads into the Lighthouse Keeper's beer quest. Learn the basic controls, buy a reliable melee weapon, and finish the Spider Crab hand-in before worrying about later islands.

🎣 Cast, Reel, and Finish the Catch

The default mouse-and-keyboard loop is simple, but line tension and physics decide whether the catch reaches shore:

⚠️
Keybinds can be changed. If your controls differ, follow the current in-game settings rather than an older guide.

💰 Build the First Loadout

Sell ordinary catches until you can afford the items required for the opening quest. Do not spend the first bankroll on roulette or cosmetics.

💡
The casino is not part of the opening route. Story gear and the Beer quest come first.

🦀 Complete “Who stole my beer”

The Lighthouse Keeper's quest is the first full progression chain:

🔥 Treat Cooking as a Later Upgrade

The grill belongs to the Island 3 route, not the starting island. After it is unlocked, cooking improves sale value and creates useful healing items.

Beginner FAQ

How do you catch fish in How to Fish?
Equip a rod, hold the left mouse button to charge the cast, and release toward the water. When a creature bites, hold the left mouse button to reel while watching line tension, then kill the landed creature before it escapes.

How does the grill work in How to Fish?
The grill is unlocked during Island 3 progression. Inspect an item while cooking and remove it around the 1.5x cooking multiplier; leaving it too long burns the item, while eating a burnt creature unlocks 'Yummy in my tummy'.

How do you upgrade your boat engine?
Sell catches and quest rewards, then buy an engine upgrade from the available island shop. The first upgrade unlocks 'Getting an upgrade' and the strongest engine unlocks 'I am speed'.

How do you defend your catch from seagulls?
Move story trophies to the quest giver as soon as a boss drops them. In co-op, one player can carry the item while another watches for seagulls and other threats.
